When the Green Bay Glory entered the WPSL as an expansion franchise this offseason, fans of the Milwaukee Torrent were excited to watch their home team face off against an instate rival.

On Saturday the Torrent proved that experience pays, defeating Green Bay in a 2-1 come-from-behind victory.

Playing away from home in front of a raucous crowd at Aldo Santaga Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay, the Torrent defensive line was initially overwhelmed by the Glory’s offensive attack. In the 23rd minute, the Glory broke through when Caitlin Hawley connected on a volley off of a corner kick from Hanna Lech.

Down 1-0 at halftime, Milwaukee coach Andreas Davi knew he had to make a number of adjustments. Davi was pleased with his team’s willingness to approach the game with a different mentality in the second half.

“My team adjusted well to the changes I made in halftime and the team played very patient,” Davi said. “We put high pressure on Green Bay and scored at the right moment.”

What appeared to be that right moment almost came in the 50th minute when Milwaukee was awarded a penalty. With the pressure of a one-goal deficit, Leah Celarek was unable to connect on the penalty, and the Torrent continued to trail.

Despite the deficit, the Torrent remained relentless in attack, consistently applying pressure on the Glory back line and in the 58th minute were awarded with another penalty kick. This time the Torrent capitalized, for Natalie Yass slotted the ball past Glory goalkeeper Sara Klimisch.

With the game tied 1-1, the Torrent was not content to go home with a well-earned road draw.

“Last year we had too many ties,” Davi said. “We want to be a really good competitor to every team.”

Lead by Davi’s winning mentality, the Torrent pressed on for the go-ahead goal and ultimately found it in the 82nd minute. The goal was a display of offensive skill and unselfishness, for forward Marisol Kroencke dribbled into the box and slotted a perfect ball to Nina Nicosia at the Green Bay six-yard box. Nicosia took two touches and put the ball into back of the net.

The win marked Milwaukee’s first victory of the season, and Coach Davi believes that the result could serve as the emotional lift the Torrent need to compete for a playoff berth.

“It will be a big confidence boost,” Davi said. “My team accepted the challenge, and they impressed me with the way they came back after not only being behind but also missing a penalty kick.”
