EL PASO, Texas — El Paso Surf, the top women’s soccer club in West Texas, has moved to the Women’s Premier Soccer League ahead of the upcoming 2020 season, the league announced Monday.

In joining the WPSL, the largest women’s soccer league in the world, the club strengthens its mission in providing the best opportunities, competition and experiences for women’s soccer in the El Paso community.

“As the leading organization in El Paso, we took a long look at how we can continue our mission to our players,” said David Lopez, Surf Executive Director and President. “The WPSL is a much better fit to meet our goals.

“The WPSL has some of the best players in the country playing in the league every summer. The league will continue to provide the opportunity for our players to play at the highest level of competition right here at home in El Paso.”

Founded in 2018, the Surf continues to emphasize homegrown development. This past season’s roster consisted of all but one player from El Paso. Top local players include defender Jasmin Porras, goalkeeper Savannah Hernandez and forward Priscilla Garcia.

The Surf plays its home matches at Americas High School. Its conference rivals will be revealed in January. For more information, visit wpslsoccer.com.

The WPSL is entering its 23rd season and is the largest women’s soccer league in the world with more than 119 clubs from coast-to-coast.  WPSL rosters feature elite collegiate, post-collegiate, international and standout prep student-athletes.  Many of the United States’ most accomplished women’s players have played in the WPSL, including household names such as Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach, Megan Rapinoe, Julie Foudy and Brandi Chastain.
