This weekend’s action in the WPSL’s West Region was highlighted by a strong debut from a Canadian expansion side and another tightly contested San Diego Derby.

TSS Rovers 4, THUSC Diamonds 2

Both THUSC Diamonds and TSS Rovers were playing on short rest having each played a match the day before. But crisp attacking play from the Rovers gave the expansion side the edge in their WPSL debut (their Friday match was an exhibition), prevailing 4-2. The breakthrough for TSS came in the 22nd minute, when a through ball from Kathleen Aitchison cut apart the THUSC back line, and Tanya Boychuk’s cutback pass found Emma Pringle, who delivered a clinical finish. Boychuk added an exclamation point to her performance with a screamer from the corner of the penalty area that tucked into the top corner of the far post.

San Diego SeaLions 1, LA Galaxy San Diego 1

It’s now five of a possible six points dropped to start the year for the San Diego SeaLions, who absolutely ran away with the PacSouth Conference a year ago. The SeaLioins shared the points in a 1-1 draw against LA Galaxy San Diego at the weekend, and it looks like the 2018 table is shaping up to be much tighter than it was a year ago. Two points separate first from third in the PacSouth with all three teams at the top of the table San Diego-based teams. Mind you, Tucson FC Women and Phoenix Del Sol have yet to play their first matches of the season. That will change soon, however, with both clubs involved in midweek action.

California Storm 3, Primero de Mayo 1

A brace from forward Remy Siemsen carried the California Storm past Primero de Mayo as Jerry Zanelli’s club picks up its first win of the 2018 WPSL campaign. The win helps the Storm keep pace with PacNorth-Bay Area table leader Fresno FC Ladies, who remain six points clear of second place.

Fresno FC Ladies 3, Pleasanton RAGE 1

After winning its WPSL debut last weekend, Pleasanton RAGE held its own against Fresno FC Ladies but were unable to pick up a result at home against the first-place club. It was crucial for Fresno to avoid a letdown following its big win over the California Storm last weekend. Having managed that, Fresno now sets its sights on the second leg of its three-match road trip against the San Francisco Nighthawks.
