South Region — Week 4 Recap

Week 4 has come and gone in the South Region featuring 16 matches across all four conferences.

 

The action began on Friday, with Asheville City SC continuing to win in what has become typical Asheville fashion. Megan McCallister scored a goal and assisted another en route to a 4-0 road win against LNSC Eclipse. The Carolina Rapids have joined Asheville at the top of the Carolinas Conference thanks to a 4-0 road win of their own against Carolina Lady Dynamo. Following a scoreless first half, the Rapids’ Megan Greene scored twice in the 57th and 59th minutes. Elsewhere in the conference, Beaufort County FC and Charleston Fleet FC both brought four points home from their two-match road trips. These two clubs now sit just two points shy of third place Oak City United.

 

Chattanooga FC remains atop the Southeast Conference following a 2-1 win at home against Nashville Rhythm. Nashville took an early lead with a 10th minute goal from Julie Garst. Chattanooga equalized in the 38th minute off a Carlie Banks header and took the lead in the 79th minute thanks to Mia Hollingsworth. Emerald Force defeated Nashville Rhythm 3-2, leaving the Force tied with Chattanooga on points, Memphis Lobos won 3-0 against Peachtree City MOBA thanks to two goals from Marie Levasseur. On Monday, Peachtree City MOBA won big against Emerald Force. Peachtree City and Nashville Rhythm now sit tied on points for third place with four each.

 

The Gulf Conference featured two matches played on Saturday. Alabama FC got its first win of the year, a 5-1 victory at home over Mississippi Blues SC, while Pensacola FC drew 1-1 with Baton Rouge United. Pensacola and Baton Rouge are now tied for first place in the conference with four points each, ahead of Alabama FC with three.

 

The Sunshine Conference season finally began with four matches involving seven clubs. Florida Gulf Coast Dutch Lions opened the weekend with a 2-0 win over Florida Tropics SC. Vesna Veltrop scored the first Sunshine Conference goal of the season in the 53rd minute, and Kendal Davis added a brace in the 77th. FC Surge picked up where it left last year and won 2-1 over the Florida Krush. Tampa Bay United, which won all 9 matches in 2017, won 2-1 over Florida Gulf Coast Dutch Lions, and Florida Sol FC defeated the brand-new Puerto Rico Pride FC 5-0.

 

South Region action continues on Wednesday with Discoveries SC taking on LNSC Eclipse followed by Rangers Ladies FC making its WPSL debut against Pensacola FC on Thursday.
