Net blemished, yet record perfect

Utah Red Devils can no longer claim to have a perfect defensive record, but it was still a six-point weekend for the Salt Lake City despite conceding a goal to Players SC. The Red Devils defeated Players 5-1 on Friday night and then completed the Vegas sweep with a 2-0 win over Las Vegas Q11 on Saturday. If you can believe it, a win next Friday against Players SC would lock up the PacNorth Mountain Conference for Utah with two matches to spare. That would be quite an achievement for a club that placed third in the division a year ago.

Bay Area thriller

For the second time this season, Fresno FC Ladies have overcome a 2-1 second-half deficit to vanquish one of their PacNorth Bay Area Conference rivals by a 3-2 score. Having given California Storm that cruel treatment back in May, Fresno did the same on Sunday to the San Francisco Nighthawks. Adding to the heartbreak for the losers, the Nighthawks would have been in sole possession of first place in the division if it had managed to see out its lead through the final whistle. But with Fresno prevailing in dramatic fashion, eyes now to turn to next week’s rematch against the California Storm.

Legends FC keeps rolling

Legends FC stays clear atop the Coastal Conference after defeating Fram Ajax 3-0. Legends’ season could be decided over the course of the next week with a pair of tough matches against Beach Futbol Club and Pateadores, which handed the division leaders its lone loss of the season so far in a resounding 4-1 result on May 31.

Phoenix Del Sol stay on top

Despite dropping the first match of its weekend doubleheader with FC Tucson Women on Friday, Phoenix Del Sol bounced back for a 2-1 win on Sunday to retain control of the PacSouth Conference. Goals from Katie Lever and Rosie McShane gave Phoenix a 2-0 halftime lead in the rematch, but Tucson pulled one back and left Phoenix holding on for dear life. This sets up a big match next Saturday between Phoenix and LA Galaxy San Diego, which squandered a chance to go top in the division by dropping points in a 2-2 draw against last place San Diego SeaLions.

Sounders Women have another 10-goal weekend

This was just the second weekend Seattle Sounders Women have been active this season, but in both weekends the Sounders offered plenty of goalmouth action. The first time around, Seattle scored all 10 of its goals in one match. But this time around, it stretched it out over two. The second match of the weekend, a 2-1 victory over Eugene Timbers FC Azul, provided perhaps the first tense moments of the Sounders’ 2018 season. After Seattle went ahead 2-0 on goals from Morgan Weaver and Sh'nia Gordon, the Timbers pulled one back in the 75th minute, and the Sounders had to fight to hang onto the full three points.

Match suspended due to fire

Smoke from a brush fire caused the suspension of a West Region match this weekend. A wildfire in San Rafael, California grew as large as 13 acres and smoke from the fire prevented MVLA Wolves from continuing on with their match against Marin FC Alliance.
