Fresno and California deliver another classic

When PacNorth powers Fresno FC Ladies and California Storm meet on the pitch, it’s always going to be a tightly contested match. But the two battles between these clubs this year will be hard for future iterations of the clubs to top. The first was a come-from-behind stunner that saw Fresno prevail in a 3-2 thriller. The return leg Saturday was another see-saw in which Fresno went up 1-0, but California stormed back (heh) to a 2-1 advantage. But the joy was sapped from the Storm by the second goal of Jaycee Ogden’s brace, the equalizer and final goal of the match. The result keeps Fresno in first place and puts it in the driver's seat in the PacNorth Conference - Bay Area, especially with San Francisco Nighthawks losing to MVLA Wolves during the weekend.

Massive results for expansion sides

Two clubs in their first seasons competing in the WPSL came away with massive points this weekend. The first was Pleasanton RAGE, which played California Storm to a 1-1 draw on Sunday after the latter club’s disappointing result against Fresno the day before. The second came from TSS Rovers, which also drew 1-1 against Seattle Sounders Women. For the RAGE, this will be a nice feather in its cap for a solid, mid-table debut campaign, but for TSS Rovers, they now have a realistic shot at winning the Northwest Conference on their first attempt.

PacSouth stays tightly bunched at top

LA Galaxy San Diego had a chance to create some separation at the top of the table heading into the PacSouth Conference’s final weekend of matches, but after defeating Phoenix Del Sol (3-0) yet losing to FC Tucson Women (0-1), the table remains as tight as ever. The Galaxy might come to rue the missed opportunity as they can pick up just three possible points in the final weekend, but both Phoenix (two points back) and Tucson (tied with Galaxy for first) have the opportunity to pick up six points if they win both of their matches.
