Then there was one.

Only one conference is up for grabs in the Central Region of the WPSL. The Heartland Conference is featuring a tight race for first place between Fire & Ice SC and Kansas City Athletics, formerly known as the KC Pride.

Last season the Pride won the conference. However, in a different conference, Fire & Ice SC went on to win its group and, eventually, won the WPSL title. Now, Fire & Ice SC is hanging on in attempts to secure the Heartland Conference.

Heartland Conference Match of the Week: Fire & Ice SC vs. Kansas City Athletics

Fire & Ice SC and the Kansas City Athletics will have all eyes on each other’s matches on Saturday. Although Fire & Ice SC hits the road to face the win-less KC Courage at Rockhurst University, the Athletics will hit the road to face the Des Moines Menace Women at Valley Stadium.

However, it’s the Athletics who have the home advantage on Sunday’s big tilt. Saturday’s results will be important, but Sunday is when the region will be claimed. The two top teams in the Heartland Conference will face off at 1 p.m. CDT at Shawnee Mission South High School.

The Heartland Conference is the only conference lacking the group winner. However, all that will change on Sunday’s big showdown.

South Texas Conference Match of the Week: TTI: Bluebonnets vs. San Antonio Blossoms

The race for first place is over.

TTI: Bluebonnets punched its ticket to the Central Region playoffs last weekend. However, now it’s about building momentum and confidence. Despite winning the group, TTI: Bluebonnets are almost eight to 10 points off from other region winners like the Chicago Red Stars Reserves and FC Dallas Women. If TTI: Bluebonnets want to have a successful playoff run, the club needs some confidence built against San Antonio.

At Blossom Athletic Center on Saturday at 7 p.m., a victory is a must.

North Conference Match of the Week: Chicago Red Stars Reserves vs. Milwaukee Torrent

The Chicago Red Stars Reserves are already on top of their Conference, the North Conference. However, a victory against the Milwaukee Torrent at Hart Park in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, could ensure the Red Stars Reserves 30 points. The club would be the only team in the Central Region to reach that feat.

Milwaukee isn’t going to let Chicago speed right past, though. The Torrent will rely on strikers like Yolanda Thomas to surprise Chicago at 3 p.m. CDT on Sunday.

Southwest Conference Match of the Week: Fortuna Tulsa vs. FC Wichita

Once FC Dallas got a hold of the Southwest Conference, the team ran away with it. However, second place is still up for grabs – even if that means no playoff spot.

Right now, it’s a three-way tie with 13 points for FC Wichita, Fortuna Tulsa and Oklahoma City FC. Two of the three teams, FC Wichita and Fortuna Tulsa, will face off this weekend at Trinity Academy Stadium at 4 p.m. CDT.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma City FC faces the winless Little Rock Rangers on Saturday at 5 p.m. All three teams will certainly keep tabs on each other’s matches. Oklahoma City FC has a real shot to place second, especially if Fortuna Tulsa and FC Wichita draw.
