HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – North Alabama SC has joined the Women’s Premier Soccer League as an expansion club for the 2019 season, the league announced Thursday, providing the highest level of amateur competition to the top female soccer players in the Greater Huntsville area.

The addition of the WPSL club coincides with Huntsville Futbol Club’s launch of North Alabama SC in Spring 2019. The club, founded in 2008 with the merger of the top two Huntsville youth soccer clubs, has more than 700 girls and boys within its system. In addition to Huntsville, the club has programs in Madison, Alabama, and Athens, Alabama.

North Alabama SC executive director Mo Khodabandeh will oversee the WPSL club.

“North Alabama SC is excited and proud to bring the WPSL to North Alabama,” Khodabandeh said. “Joining the WPSL allows our club to provide a full development pathway for the women’s game in North Alabama. The WPSL will have a transformational and positive impact on the entire North Alabama soccer community, both on and off the pitch. We can’t wait to kickoff the 2019 season.”

North Alabama SC will play its home matches at John Hunt Park Championship Soccer Stadium in Huntsville. The venue has 1,000 permanent seats, providing an intimate home atmosphere.

The club, which will play in the South Region, will have an immediate local rival with Alabama F.C. less than two hours south in Birmingham. Conference alignments for the 2019 season will be announced in the coming months.

The women’s club joins CAFC Ospreys (Frederica, Delaware), EGA Omaha, Alamo City SC (San Antonio), Chatham FC (Savannah, Georgia), Wake FC (Raleigh, North Carolina), ASC San Diego, EPIC Sport Management (Victoria, British Columbia), Indios Denver FC, FC Arizona Women (Phoenix), Charlotte Eagles and Philadelphia Lone Star FC as announced 2019 expansion clubs.

The WPSL is in its 22nd season and is the largest women’s soccer league in the world with more than 100 clubs from coast-to-coast.  WPSL rosters feature elite collegiate, post-collegiate, international and standout prep student-athletes.  Many of the United States’ most accomplished women’s players have played in the WPSL, including household names such as Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach, Megan Rapinoe, Julie Foudy and Brandi Chastain.
